Bumhan Fuel Cell Co., Ltd. (382900) is trading today around KRW 26,300, up 12.63% from the previous close. It hit the daily up-limit on September 9 as well.
On September 9, Bumhan closed at the daily up-limit of KRW 23,350, up KRW 5,360 (29.79%) from the previous close. The rally extended the next day, marking two consecutive sessions of gains.
Yet KOSDAQ Fell
The KOSDAQ index fell 5.31 points (0.64%) to 825.06 on the same day. While the broader index declined, this single stock gained double digits.
It's not a market-wide rally. This move is confined to a single stock and the fuel-cell sector.
It Started With a Doosan Fuel Cell Contract
The catalyst wasn't an announcement by Bumhan itself. On September 2, news broke first that Doosan Fuel Cell had signed a KRW 501.4 billion phosphoric-acid fuel cell supply contract with U.S. HyAXiom.
AI data centers consume massive amounts of power and require stable supply. Fuel cells have emerged as a backup-power alternative. The Doosan contract moved the entire fuel-cell theme.
Bumhan has not announced a new contract of its own. A regional news outlet noted that the stock surge occurred without a direct announcement from the company—effectively riding the sector theme.
But the Company Has Some Fundamentals
Bumhan has held an exclusive supplier position since 2018 for air-independent propulsion (AIP) fuel cell modules for Jangboigo-Class submarines—an established track record. The company has also recently secured contracts in the KRW 7 billion range.
The market's narrative centers on a potential upside: if Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries win the Canadian submarine order they are pursuing, demand for fuel cell modules for those vessels could rise. The order is not yet confirmed; these are expectations contingent on winning it.
In August, the company announced development of a 10 kW-class cascaded solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system with 60.8% efficiency, described as Korea's first at this scale.
But Earnings Are Actually Weak
The numbers paint a different picture. Q1 2026 revenue was KRW 20.2 billion with an operating loss of KRW 860 million, yielding an operating margin of -42.5%.
Full-year 2025 wasn't much better: revenue of KRW 43.4 billion and operating profit of KRW 900 million, down 64.4% year-over-year. While technically profitable, the margin has virtually disappeared.
Right now, sentiment is lifting the stock more than actual earnings. Submarine orders, the data-center theme, SOFC technology—unrealized future scenarios are driving the price.
The official KRX P/E is currently 128x, possibly based on prior-period earnings. Using 2025 results, it calculates to 173x. Either way, the valuation is not cheap.
What Are Brokers Saying?
| Brokerage | Target Price | Note |
| Shinhan Investment Securities | KRW 16,000 | Trading BUY; reflects expectations for new orders in H2 |
This target is already below today's stock price of KRW 26,300—the stock has substantially exceeded the broker's estimate.
The Takeaway
In summary, this surge didn't originate from company-specific news for Bumhan alone. Rather, the Doosan contract appears to have catalyzed a sector-wide move in fuel cells tied to the AI data-center power theme.
Bumhan does hold a unique position in submarine fuel cells and faces potential catalysts like the Canadian submarine order. The current valuation has already priced in these expectations. For a company posting an operating loss of KRW 860 million in the latest quarter, the price is substantial.
Two inflection points merit close watching: whether Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries actually land the Canadian submarine order, and whether Q2 results show the loss narrowing. Until at least one of these plays out in actual numbers, remember that today's price reflects expectations created by headlines, not realized fundamentals.
