[Stock in Focus] SuNAM Surges 14% on U.S. Supply Contract

SuNAM Co., Ltd. (294630) jumped sharply on the KOSDAQ on September 7, trading near 3,285 KRW, up 14.66% from the prior close. The KOSDAQ index itself opened at 822.91, gaining just 1.16% over the same period.

A 14% move in a single stock against a 1% index gain signals company-specific momentum. A discrete catalyst, not a broad market rally, was at work.

What does SuNAM do?

SuNAM, founded in 2004, specializes in superconducting wire. The company listed on KOSDAQ in 2020 and manufactures second-generation high-temperature superconductor (2G HTS) wire using its proprietary RCE-DR process. Below a certain temperature, superconducting materials exhibit zero electrical resistance.

Applications include power transmission cables, current-limiting reactors, fusion reactors, and motor/generator windings. In practical terms, it is an ultra-efficient wire substitute for copper. The same diameter wire can carry hundreds of times more current with negligible losses.

The photos show actual superconducting wire spools produced by SuNAM. They resemble ordinary film rolls, but a single strand of that thin wire conducts hundreds of times the current of copper equivalents.

Interest in SuNAM has recently resurged due to AI data centers. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electrical power. Conventional copper cabling incurs significant transmission losses and occupies substantial physical space. Superconducting cables allow higher power density in the same footprint.

The direct catalyst for today's move

SuNAM filed a supply contract on September 4 for high-temperature superconductor wire valued at KRW 6.623 billion (approximately USD 487,200). The delivery destination is the United States. The contract period runs from September 4, 2026, through February 10, 2027.

The nominal amount may seem modest, but the company disclosed that it represents 19.56% of FY2025 revenue (KRW 3.386 billion). For a small-cap manufacturer, a single contract of this scale carries disproportionate weight. Five such contracts would equal annual sales.

The counterparty is undisclosed due to confidentiality agreements. SuNAM is known to have prior collaboration with U.S.-based VEIR on superconducting transmission systems for AI data centers. Whether VEIR is the counterparty in this contract cannot be confirmed from public filings. That distinction is reserved here as unconfirmed.

Is the company currently profitable?

FY2025 revenue totaled KRW 3.4 billion with an operating loss of KRW 3.9 billion (on an individual basis). Revenue grew 13.6% year-over-year, but the company remains unprofitable.

Operating losses span five consecutive years. Capital impairment stands at 26.1%. Current market capitalization is approximately KRW 80 billion; the official P/E ratio is −17.26x, which is not meaningful for an operating-loss company.

A single contract will not flip the company to profitability. The order represents a one-time win approaching 20% of annual revenue, but the underlying financial condition remains thin. Losses remain losses.

History of similar surges

SuNAM received an investment-warning designation on February 19, 2026. The prior closing price on February 13 had exceeded its level five trading days earlier by over 60%—more than five times the KOSDAQ index gain over that span.

Stocks under investment warning may have trading halted if they advance 40% or more within two trading days from the designation date. The superconductor theme has historically cycled through sharp rallies and selloffs alongside peers such as Shinshin Delta Tech and Ducksung.

DART filings show SuNAM has issued convertible bonds (2021), conducted a share issuance (December 2025), and adjusted conversion prices on four occasions. In 2024, the company reported an ongoing investigation into embezzlement and breach of fiduciary duty. This is not a quiet stock.

Bottom line

Today's rise reflects company-specific news, not a broad market move. The catalyst is explicit: a KRW 6.6 billion supply contract for superconducting wire to the U.S., filed September 4, alongside widening expectations for AI data-center demand for superconducting transmission systems.

SuNAM remains unprofitable in its seventh consecutive year, with material capital impairment. A single contract does not change underlying profitability dynamics. The superconductor theme itself has a history of dramatic reversals, a pattern worth monitoring.

Key watch points are when the September contract revenue is recognized on the income statement and whether additional partnership announcements with VEIR or other overseas partners materialize in future disclosures. The counterparty identity remains confidential, a limitation worth reiterating.
