Samah Aluminum shares jumped sharply today, closing near KRW 65,800, up 11.90% from the previous day. The broader KOSPI was flat during the session, but this stock's outsize gain signals a catalyst specific to the company or its sector.
The market was quiet. Yet this one stock surged nearly 12%, not a market-wide move. That points to a stock- or sector-specific story.
What kind of company is this?
Samah Aluminum originally manufactured aluminum foil for cigarette packaging and tuna cans—a classic, long-established company. But in 1998, it became the first in South Korea to develop secondary-battery-grade aluminum foil.
Today, the company supplies positive-electrode current-collector foil to South Korea's three major battery makers: LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On. It has transformed completely. SK On is understood to source 90% of its aluminum foil from Samah.
Today's jump: aluminum raw-material prices are the real driver
LME aluminum prices dropped to $2,161.50 per metric ton on July 31 and recovered to $2,520 per metric ton today, August 27. In just one month, prices have risen 17%.
The driver is supply-side. Guinea, the world's largest bauxite producer, has moved to restrict exports. The country accounts for 40% of global bauxite output. Guinea's mining minister said the nation would regulate exports, stating that "supply should not exceed demand." Alumina prices have also climbed more than 20% this month, approaching their 2018 high of $707.75 per metric ton, according to reports.
In fact, Samah saw a similar move in April when Middle East tensions raised concerns about aluminum supply disruptions. The stock surged 17.42% in a single day on April 9 (from KRW 42,200 to KRW 49,550). Raw-material supply anxiety, aluminum-price gains, and Samah stock surges have now aligned twice.
The pattern may seem counterintuitive—a company that consumes raw materials benefiting from rising input costs. Aluminum-foil makers typically pass raw-material cost increases through to customers, so investors tend to view raw-material rallies as drivers of higher sales and revaluation. That said, this is market interpretation. Whether cost pass-through actually materializes will be visible in next quarter's earnings.
Q2 results: one number clearly improved
Q2 2026 preliminary results (disclosed August 14): revenue KRW 193.8 billion, operating profit KRW 3.5 billion, operating margin 1.8%.
Year-over-year, the company swung from an operating loss of KRW 3.3 billion to a profit. The result exceeded market consensus of KRW 1.1 billion by more than threefold. However, Q1 told a different story: revenue of KRW 269.7 billion but an operating loss of KRW 17.5 billion. Q2's profit is just the start of a rebound, not yet a confirmed recovery.
In an April report, SK Securities forecast full-capacity utilization in the second half of 2026, viewing August as the start of earnings recovery. The rationale: while automotive and battery demand has softened, energy-storage-system demand is surging. Whether this thesis holds will be confirmed by next quarter's capacity utilization.
The entire battery sector is heating up
The battery sector has turned white-hot in August. Samsung SDI has rallied nearly 30% (29.97%) this month alone. LG Energy Solution is up 12.65%. Secondary-battery and KOSDAQ-leverage ETFs have posted gains around 40% for the month, according to reports—a far cry from daily volatility.
Samah is not a finished-battery maker; it's a materials supplier selling aluminum foil. It tends to lag sector rallies. Today's surge reflects the convergence of battery-sector strength and raw-material tailwinds. Both sector momentum and commodity fundamentals appear to be at work. It's unclear which factor weighs more.
Risks to note
· On August 5, the Korea Exchange designated the stock as subject to investment caution. The reason: excessive trading involvement by a specific account. Over the past three trading days, the stock's swing reached 40.32%, which is substantial. The buying involvement ratio of that account exceeded the threshold at 5.60%, according to filings. This signals elevated volatility and the potential for short-term trading involvement.
· Brokerage price targets range widely: KRW 81,000, KRW 100,000, and KRW 55,000. Relying on a single target is difficult.
· Rising raw-material prices are not an indefinite tailwind. A scenario where delayed cost pass-through or demand weakness leaves only margin pressure is possible.
So, what's the status of this stock now?
To recap: Q2's swing to profit provided a seed for earnings recovery. That coincided with aluminum supply concerns from Guinea and sector-wide battery momentum. Hence today's surge.
As the caution designation shows, volatility itself is elevated. Price targets vary widely across brokerages. The catalysts are clear. Whether they translate into next quarter's earnings remains to be seen.
The next checkpoint is Q3 earnings. Whether full-capacity operation in the second half and aluminum cost pass-through show up in the numbers will be decisive. It will determine whether today's surge was a one-time spike or the start of something more.
