On August 20, 2026, MicroStrategy (MSTR) stock jumped 11.90% on U.S. markets and is now trading around $103.53. Just yesterday on the 19th, it had already rocketed 14.05% to $105.52, so we're looking at back-to-back double-digit rallies—a rare sight.
At this point, the company is less of a software vendor and more like a publicly traded Bitcoin trust. So if you want to know why the stock jumped, you've got to watch Washington and Bitcoin prices before you even glance at earnings.
Why did it pop today?
The direct trigger was a crypto policy meeting at the White House on August 19. President Trump convened SEC Chair Paul Atkins, CFTC Chair Michael Sellig, and crypto industry leaders from Coinbase, Ripple, Gemini, and Robinhood. The market saw this as a signal that regulatory uncertainty is clearing, and Bloomberg noted that Bitcoin had its biggest move since March leading into the meeting.
When Bitcoin rises, MicroStrategy's stock typically swings even harder. Yesterday's 14.05% jump happened even though the company's Bitcoin holdings (net asset value) only climbed 6.11%—the stock nearly doubled that move. Market cap grew by $5.17 billion in a single day, yet the actual increase in asset value was only $3.59 billion. In other words, investors are paying $1.44 for every $1 of asset value—a ratio we call mNAV (modified net asset value), which has now climbed to 1.05x.
What's curious is Saylor didn't even get an invite to this one
The face of this company is founder and Chairman Michael Saylor. At the first White House crypto summit in March 2025, he was center stage pitching his vision that America could earn $100 trillion through crypto-friendly policy. This time around, his name wasn't on the guest list. Market sentiment moved independently of the company itself, so today's rally is less about Saylor's words and more about expectations for lighter regulation.
Saylor recently drew a line in the sand, saying stock buybacks aren't a priority right now, but he warned shareholders to "hang on for at least four years"—tough times may be coming. In early August, the company sold 1,638 Bitcoin and raised $290 million through a new stock offering, but that wasn't to load up on more Bitcoin; it was for redeeming preferred shares and shoring up liquidity. Still, the company holds roughly 842,138 Bitcoin—about 4% of all Bitcoin in circulation—making it by far the largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder.
Is this premium justified?
Here's what that 1.05x mNAV really means: if the company liquidated every Bitcoin at today's price, shareholders would get 5% less than what the stock market is paying for the whole company right now. Compared to times when this premium hit 2x or more, 1.05x looks tame, but you're still overpaying for MicroStrategy stock versus buying Bitcoin directly. The company's actual software business barely registers in stock moves anymore.
Regulatory clouds haven't fully cleared. The Clarity Act, a key market structure bill, got shelved when the Senate adjourned in August without a vote. This White House meeting just set the mood—actual legislation will take more time.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Today's Movement | +11.90% (around $103.53) |
| Yesterday (8/19) Movement | +14.05% ($105.52) |
| Bitcoin Holdings | Roughly 842,138 |
| mNAV (Net Asset Value Multiplier) | Approximately 1.05x |
So here's where we are
Right now, MicroStrategy is less about the company itself and more like a derivative that moves almost lock-step with Washington's crypto stance and Bitcoin's price. Today's surge didn't happen because the company did anything new—the White House meeting pushed Bitcoin higher, and that multiplier just rode along.
There's one thing worth watching: when (or if) the Clarity Act actually passes Congress, does that mNAV premium expand further, or does 'catalyst fatigue' actually squeeze it tighter? Saylor himself warned of "rough years," so keep an eye on how hard this stock corrects when Bitcoin pulls back—that multiplier cuts both ways. Once you understand the math behind the rally, you read it very differently.
