We're talking about Kucon (294570) today. Right now it's trading around 25,050 KRW, up +14.91% from yesterday. That's the intraday level. Just to be clear, since the market hasn't closed yet, these numbers aren't the final close—they're where we stand this very moment.
At that same moment, KOSPI is at 6,852. Compared to yesterday's close around 6,869, it's basically flat. The market's quiet. But Kucon jumped nearly 15% on its own. This isn't a move driven by the broader index. It's purely a Kucon-specific story.
Kucon might sound unfamiliar, but what they do is already all around us
Kucon was founded in 2006 and listed on KOSDAQ in 2021. Its clients include about 2,000 companies—everything from traditional financial institutions and card companies to big tech players like Naver Pay, Kakao Pay, and Toss. They supply financial, public, and real-world data to these clients via APIs. You know when your banking app shows you balances from other banks in one view? Often, there's a data intermediary infrastructure like Kucon sitting behind that.
They have two main business lines. The 'Data' division, which sells data APIs. And the 'Payment' division, which sells payment infrastructure like QR payment and ATM withdrawal networks. Lately, it's mostly the Payment side that's moving the stock. Specifically, it's all the stablecoin news.
Why does Kucon jump every time stablecoin news breaks?
Kucon has infrastructure for about 2 million QR payment merchants and roughly 40,000 ATMs across South Korea. When someone pays with stablecoin, someone's got to convert it to won and settle it with the merchant. Kucon's strategy is to be that bridge. In November 2025, they signed an agreement with the Solana Foundation to technically validate stablecoin payment infrastructure. Recently, they've also been partnering with TripleA to experiment with connecting overseas payment services like Binance Pay to domestic merchants.
Add government moves into the mix. The Financial Services Commission has prepared the second-phase government proposal for the Digital Asset Basic Act, which covers won-denominated stablecoin regulation. They're pushing for National Assembly passage in the second half of the year. Every time related legislation makes the news, payment infrastructure stocks like Kucon react in tandem—this pattern's played out several times already this year. In February, it jumped 12% on Circle's upbeat earnings. In July, it nearly hit the daily limit on news of collaboration discussions with Circle and Tether.
So is today the same story? Honestly, as of this moment, I can't pinpoint a specific filing or single piece of news. But it's clear that Kucon is a stock that has repeatedly surged on stablecoin themes. The timing also lines up with the Digital Asset Basic Act getting renewed attention ahead of the regular parliamentary session. Once the market closes and any material news drops, we can check again then.
So is the company actually making money right now?
The most recent quarter we can look at is Q1 2026. Revenue was 16.01 billion won, with operating profit of 4.47 billion won. Year-over-year, revenue declined 7.5%. Operating profit grew 1.9%. Breaking it down by division: Payment brought in 8.21 billion won (23.6% operating margin), while Data brought in 7.8 billion won (32.5% operating margin). Revenue is flat, but they're holding the line on margins.
For the full year 2025, revenue was 69.5 billion won and operating profit was 18.9 billion won. Operating profit grew 13.7% year-over-year. Revenue is stagnant while profit keeps growing—that's the pattern. According to the company, this is the result of cutting one-off project revenue and pivoting to a fee-based business model. Q2 results appear to have been released in August. However, I couldn't cross-check the detailed numbers through two or more reliable sources, so I haven't included them here.
There are risks, though
One piece of stablecoin news and the stock swings double digits. That's also a sign the business hasn't been proven through earnings yet. The partnerships with Solana Foundation and TripleA are all still in the 'proof of concept' stage. It'll take time to translate any of this into actual revenue. And the Digital Asset Basic Act still hasn't passed the National Assembly.
Competition is tough too. Companies like NHN KCP, NICE Information, and Settle Bank compete in similar space. While their average PER hovers around 24x, Kucon has historically commanded a higher valuation. If the theme cools off, that premium could evaporate. It's also worth noting that revenue itself has been declining year-over-year for several quarters now.
So how should we read today's 15% jump?
Kucon is a real company with substance. It has data infrastructure that banks and big tech actually use. It generates operating profit consistently. But today's surge isn't about earnings. It's more of a signal that the stablecoin and Digital Asset Basic Act theme has flipped back on.
Stocks like this pull back fast when momentum runs out. True story: after the 12% surge earlier this year, and again after the July surge, significant gains were given back within days. There's one thing to watch. How far does the Digital Asset Basic Act actually get in the National Assembly? And when—if ever—do these stablecoin partnerships move past proof of concept into actual revenue? Until then, we should keep in mind that this is a stock that can swing 15% on a single headline, just like today.
