On August 13, 2026, the KOSPI index surged 3.56% to close at 6,813.34. This marks the fourth consecutive day of gains, and it's the first time since July 23 that the index has recovered above the 6,800 level on a closing basis.
But here's what caught my eye when I looked deeper into today's supply and demand: while foreigners were buying ₩2.12 trillion worth of KOSPI spot holdings, they simultaneously sold 504 KOSPI200 futures contracts. The same investor group buying in the spot market while selling in the futures market—that's unusual. This article breaks down why this happened and what really drove the index higher today.
Why did the index swing so much?
The KOSPI opened with a gap-up at 6,773.92, then briefly shot up to 6,895.63 (+4.81%) in the morning session. If it had held there, today's gain would've been close to 5%. But it quickly gave back those gains, sliding back to the 6,780 level. Then it bounced to 6,850 in the afternoon before slipping to 6,748.13 late in the session. Finally, it managed one last push higher to close at 6,813.34.
The gap between today's high and low was 147 points—a 2.2 percentage-point swing. For a day with a 4-5% rally, this was an unusually bumpy ride. Today happened to be August option expiration day, and InfoStock noted that the impact was "limited." So the real driver of this volatility wasn't options—it was more likely the spot-futures mismatch in flows that I mentioned earlier.
KOSPI and KOSDAQ charts
KOSPI index daily chart (Naver Finance)
KOSDAQ closed at 861.37, +0.29% (Naver Finance)
KOSDAQ told a different story than KOSPI. It did mark a fourth consecutive day of gains at 861.37, but the uptick was just 0.29%. Retail investors bought ₩256.5 billion while foreigners and institutions each sold ₩137.8 billion and ₩115.3 billion respectively. Semiconductor supply chain plays (Woonjin IPS +7.62%, ISC +7.10%, HPSP +6.60%) held firm alongside KOSPI semiconductor peers, but cosmetics (Silicone Two -9.83%, Darbal Global -9.92%) and entertainment (JYP Ent. -11.20%) dragged things down.
The real reason for buying spot and selling futures
| Category | Foreigners | Institutions | Retail |
|---|---|---|---|
| KOSPI Spot | +₩2.12 Trillion | +₩681.4 Billion | -₩2.74 Trillion |
| KOSPI200 Futures | -504 contracts | +259 contracts | +285 contracts |
Compiled and created
Look at the table and you'll see retail selling ₩2.74 trillion in spot but buying 285 futures contracts. Total opposite directions. This isn't retail indecision—it looks more like profit-taking on spot holdings while hedging through futures to protect against further gains. Foreigners show a similar pattern: they've been buying for four days in a row on the spot side, but the futures selling (504 contracts) is small relative to their ₩2 trillion spot move, so it's more positioning adjustment than a directional bet against the market.
What really pushed the index higher today wasn't complex derivatives math—it was something simple. U.S. July inflation came in at 3.4% year-over-year, cooler than June's 3.5% and matching expectations. That took some air out of fears about further Fed rate hikes, and according to the CME FedWatch tool, the odds of a September pause jumped to 62.0%. With inflation worries easing, money flowed into risk assets—a straightforward risk-on day.
Gainers and losers by sector
Electrical/electronics was the star, up 5.16%. Ongoing momentum from AI data center investment expectations pushed semiconductor-related shares higher across the board. What stood out was Samsung Electronics (+4.89%) being outpaced by Samsung Electro-Mechanics (+12.58%). Morgan Stanley's decision to shift its top Korea tech pick from Samsung Electronics to Samsung Electro-Mechanics continues to fuel the move. I've covered this story in more detail in a separate article linked below.

Insurance was another strength. Hanwha Life surged +7.02% after reporting Q2 net profit of ₩522.9 billion (+215.5% YoY), and DB Insurance (+4.78%) and Hanwha Insurance (+3.39%) rode the positive earnings momentum.

On the flip side, electricity and gas was the worst performer at -5.25%. Buying power was so concentrated in semiconductors and batteries today that utilities got left behind—that looks like relative weakness from rotation more than fundamentals. The details weren't clear from InfoStock's report, so more investigation is needed. Entertainment was also soft, with JYP Ent. plunging 11.20% on weak Q2 earnings and uncertainty around TWICE contract renewal talks, dragging down the entire sector.

Daily limit-up and surging stocks
K&S Inc, which listed today, soared +39.82% above its IPO price. Dialtec (+29.98%) and Winpack (+29.92%) both hit daily limits on Q2 earnings beats. Kumho Electric (001210), which marked three straight limit-ups, is tied to the semiconductor cluster theme—but there's more to this stock's 30% pop on a 3.56% KOSPI day. I've covered this one separately, so check the link below.
On the SpaceX front, falling short interest fueled a space/aerospace rally: Ajooa IB Investment (+29.89%) and Mirae Asset Venture Investment (+8.39%) led the way. G2 Power (+29.89%) hit the limit-up after winning international certification for its immersive liquid cooling ESS for AI data centers.

What to watch tomorrow
Today's rally rode on U.S. inflation relief and semiconductor strength. For this to continue, both need to keep working in our favor. The question is whether foreigners' cautious futures selling—despite ongoing spot buying—is just a one-day adjustment or the start of a warning signal about near-term overheating. I'll need to watch tomorrow's flows to make that call.
