This morning on August 21st US Eastern time, Coinbase (COIN) stock is trading around $188, up 9.14% during today's session. Yesterday's close was $172.35, and the stock opened at $180 right out of the gate, eventually hitting $188.70 mid-morning. Keep in mind these numbers are still moving since markets are still open as I write this.
It was already up 7.1% in pre-market trading yesterday. Today it jumped over 9% again. That's two days running. When you see a move like that, there's definitely a story here.
Why did this stock shoot up this week?
It starts on August 19th. President Trump invited crypto industry CEOs to the Roosevelt Room at the White House. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, Ripple's Brad Garlinghouse, Robinhood's Vlad Tenev—they all showed up. At this meeting, Trump urged Congress to move forward with the CLARITY Act. Here's what the law does—it's straightforward, really. It classifies cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin as commodities instead of securities.
Why does this matter? Half of Coinbase's business is basically regulatory risk. When it's unclear whether what you're selling is a security or a commodity, you get hit with lawsuits and it becomes really hard to expand. A law that clears up this ambiguity is moving toward passage, so the stock is reacting to that.
The next day, on the 20th, Armstrong went on CNBC and said, "We may be on the threshold of the next major spot trading bull market." Sure, you could write that off as CEO cheerleading for his own stock. But he's saying this the day after meeting Trump directly. The CLARITY Act procedural vote is scheduled for September 15th, and it needs 60 votes to pass. The votes haven't been counted yet.
Bitcoin flew too, which is weird
Coinbase is an exchange. The more people buy and sell crypto, the more fees they collect. When Bitcoin goes up, Coinbase follows. But this time the move was outsized. Bitcoin is up nearly 20% this week alone, and it crossed $75,000 in Asian trading on the 21st. That's the biggest weekly gain since March.
Here's the thing though—this isn't purely organic buying. In the last 24 hours, $2.7 billion worth of short positions got liquidated. That's the biggest squeeze since 2021's data started. Over $1 billion of that got cleared in just one hour. People who bet on Bitcoin falling are cutting losses, which pushes the price up even higher. When a short squeeze is driving the rally, the move can reverse just as fast. Keep this in mind.
But is the company actually making money?
If you only read the headlines, it all sounds like politics. But the company's actual numbers are solid. In Q2 2026, Coinbase's market share hit 10.3%, marking the third straight quarter of record highs. Adjusted EBITDA has been positive for 14 consecutive quarters. And the revenue mix has shifted. Nearly half of net revenue now comes from subscriptions and services. That means when crypto prices swing around, a growing chunk of revenue comes in every month like clockwork.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Previous Close | $172.35 |
| Current Price (Intraday) | ~$188.10 (+9.14%) |
| Q2 Market Share | 10.3% (3rd consecutive record) |
| Year-to-Date | Still -27.4% |
But why is it still down 27% from the start of the year?
Here's another number worth looking at. Even with today's spike, Coinbase is still down 27.4% from the start of the year. The 52-week high was $387.27. Yesterday's close was down 55.7% from that peak. Two days of gains don't make up for that gap.
I don't have a perfect answer for why the gap is so wide. But I have a theory. There's been regulatory hope for a while, but the bill has never actually passed. This stock has already played out this cycle several times—expectations build and get priced in, then the vote gets delayed and the rally evaporates. September 15th could be another round of the same thing.
So where does this stock stand?
Right now, the catalysts look good. The White House is sending deregulation signals, and the company's fundamentals are genuinely improving. Just remember that a lot of today's gain is pricing in the expectation before the bill actually passes. The law hasn't gone through yet.
There's one thing to watch. September 15th—does the CLARITY Act get 60 votes? The Senate already skipped a vote before recessing this summer, so there's still a good chance this gets delayed again. If it passes, this stock moves into a new phase. If it gets pushed back, today's gains could easily reverse.
Rally built on short squeezes don't last. But this time there's real substance underneath—improved fundamentals. It's worth another look before September 15th.
