청춘(Youth) - 성공스낵

청춘

청춘이란 인생의 어느 한 시기가 아닌

사람의 마음가짐을 뜻한다네.

청춘은 장밋빛 볼, 붉은 입술, 부드러운 무릎이 아니라

풍부한 상상력과 왕성한 감수성, 의지력

그리고 인생의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 신선함을 뜻한다네.

​

청춘이란 두려움을 이기는 용기,

안이함을 뿌리치는 모험심,

그리고 탁월한 정신력을 뜻한다네.

때로는 예순 살 노인이 스무 살 청년보다 더 청춘일 수 있다네.

​

세월이 흐른다고 늙는 것이 아니라

이상을 잃어버릴 때 늙는 것이라네.

세월은 피부에 주름을 새기지만

열정으로 채워진 마음을 시들게 하지는 못한다네.

​

근심과 두려움, 자신감의 상실이

우리 기백을 죽이고 마음을 시들게 한다네.

나이가 예순 살이든 열 여섯 살이든 가슴 속에는

경이로움을 향한 동경과 어린이 같은 왕성한 탐구심과

인생에서 기쁨을 얻고자 하는 열망이 있는 법이라네.

그대의 가슴 속에 그리고 나의 가슴 속에는 마음의 안테나가 있어

인간과 신으로부터 아름다움과 희망, 기쁨, 용기, 힘의 영감을 받는 한 

우리는 언제나 청춘일 수 있다네.

​

그대 가슴 속에 안테나가 무너지고

정신이 냉소와 비관의 눈으로 덮일 때

그대가 비록 스무 살이라고 하더라도 노인이지만,

가슴 속 안테나를 높이 세우고 희망을 품고 있는 한

그대가 비록 여든 살이라도 죽을 때까지 청춘이라네.

Youth is not a time of life

it is a state of mind

it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips, and supple knees

it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions

it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

​

Youth means a temperamantal predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite,

for adventure over love of ease.

This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. 

We grow old by deserting our ideals.

​

Years may wrinkle the skin,

but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. 

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart

and turns the sprit back to the dust.

​

Weather sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, 

the unfailing chidlike appetite of what's next, 

and the joy of the game of living.

​

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station;

so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer,

courage and power from men and from the Infinite so long

are you young.

​

When the aerials are down, 

and your sprit is covered with snows of cynicism 

and the ice of pessimism, 

then you are grown old, even at twenty, 

but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, 

there is hope you may die young at eighty.
